Land O’ Lakes Faces Zephyrhills With a Chance to Change Its Early-Season Direction

The first two weeks have come against Newsome and Alonso, two difficult opponents to open a season against, and Land O’ Lakes was only a couple of plays away from having a very different result against Newsome.

Now comes the Gators’ first Pasco County matchup of the season, and it comes against a familiar program in Zephyrhills.

That is what makes Friday night interesting.

Dan Goodspeed and his staff have a well-coached Land O’ Lakes team that has been competitive despite the record. The Gators have shown the ability to knock off good teams before, and now they get another chance to turn some of those good stretches into their first win of 2026.

Zephyrhills comes in from a different spot.

The Bulldogs dropped their opener before bouncing back last week with a win over a Wesley Chapel team that had been playing well. The defense has looked like the strength of the team early, while the offense is still trying to settle in with junior quarterback Joshuan Howard taking over.

Howard has thrown for 225 yards and three touchdowns through two games, which ranks fifth in Pasco County. He has also added 76 yards and two scores on the ground.

The next step is getting more out of the playmakers around him.

Saniiyin Black entered the season as one of the most dangerous players in Pasco County after finishing last year with a county-leading 872 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Through two games, the four-star senior has only three receptions for 54 yards.

That is a number Zephyrhills would obviously like to see change.

There are other options in the offense. Marcus Gonzales has rushed for 96 yards, which puts him 10th among Pasco County’s rushing leaders, while Howard has been able to make plays with his legs. But getting Black more involved would give the Bulldogs another dimension as Howard continues getting comfortable running the offense.

Land O’ Lakes is dealing with some of the same questions at quarterback.

The Gators have used both Luke Falco and Canon West through the first two weeks as they continue trying to develop the passing game. Falco has thrown for 166 yards and a touchdown, ranking seventh in Pasco County in passing yards, while West has also seen significant snaps.

Where Land O’ Lakes has had more success is on the ground.

Elisha Melendez has carried the ball 37 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns through two games. His 157 yards rank fourth in Pasco County, and the Gators have shown they are willing to stay patient with the run and make teams defend it for four quarters.

That could be their best path Friday.

If Land O’ Lakes can keep the game in front of them, run the football and avoid giving Zephyrhills short fields, the Gators have a chance to keep this tight deep into the second half.

They also have enough on defense to do it.

Danilo Faria leads Land O’ Lakes with 15 tackles, tied for sixth in Pasco County, while Ricardo Goode has 13. Against a Zephyrhills offense that is still finding its rhythm, the opportunity is there for Land O’ Lakes to keep the score within reach.

Zephyrhills will want the opposite.

The Bulldogs would like to get Howard settled early, create some easier touches for Black and force Land O’ Lakes away from the run game. If they can build an early lead and make the Gators chase points, the matchup starts to tilt much more in their favor.

Defensively, Zephyrhills has already shown it can make that difficult.

Zacary Carroll has 21 tackles through two games, tied for second in Pasco County. Kevin Kirkland has 14 tackles and four tackles for loss, while Adrian Segura has added 12 tackles. It has been a physical group, and that defense played a big role in getting the Bulldogs back on track last week.

For Zephyrhills, Friday is another chance to build after the bounce-back win and continue working through the early changes offensively.

For Land O’ Lakes, this feels a little more urgent.

An 0-3 start would not tell the full story of how competitive the Gators have been, especially considering the schedule they have faced, but at some point the close games have to turn into wins.

Friday will give them that opportunity.

If Land O’ Lakes can lean on Melendez and the run game, keep Zephyrhills’ offense on the sideline and make this a four-quarter game, the Gators have a real chance to steal one and get their season moving in a different direction.

Zephyrhills has more than enough talent to prevent that.

But this one may be a lot more competitive than the records suggest.
