There had been plenty of talk surrounding Lakewood and Boca Ciega long before the two teams ever lined up Friday night.

The programs went back and forth throughout the offseason, with some of that carrying over after multiple players transferred from Lakewood to Boca Ciega. By the time the Week 4 matchup arrived, there was already a little more attached to this one than a normal district game.

Once the ball was kicked off, Lakewood let its play do the talking.

The Spartans beat Boca Ciega 20-6, shutting down an offense that had been one of the most productive in Pinellas County through the opening weeks of the season.

Boca Ciega quarterback Noah Walstad entered the night sixth in the county in passing despite playing only two games because of the Pirates’ Week 3 bye. He had already thrown six touchdown passes, while Boca Ciega was averaging 41 points per game and allowing just 6.5.

Lakewood’s defense never allowed the Pirates offense to reach the end zone.

It wasn’t always clean early.

Penalties hurt both teams throughout a sloppy first half, and neither offense was able to establish much of a rhythm. Boca Ciega eventually took a 6-0 lead into halftime, but its only points came on defense when Clifford Smith intercepted freshman quarterback Christopher Davis and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.

The game started to turn after the break.

With 6:36 remaining in the third quarter, Lakewood finally broke through when Davis connected with freshman wide receiver Sage Wells for a 35-yard touchdown.

From there, the Spartans defense took over.

With around seven minutes remaining in the fourth, Michael Reed undercut a deep ball from Walstad, came away with the interception and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown, giving Lakewood its first real separation of the night.

Running back Wayne Walters finished the game off later in the fourth, punching in a two-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 20-6.

While the touchdowns changed the scoreboard, Lakewood’s defensive front was setting the tone throughout the night.

Armarrion Hooker was consistently around the football and spent much of the game in the Boca Ciega backfield. He got to the quarterback, created pressure and forced Walstad to make throws before he wanted to.

That pressure was a major part of Lakewood holding a Boca Ciega offense that had been averaging more than 40 points per game without an offensive touchdown.

For Lakewood, the win also matters beyond everything surrounding the matchup.

The Spartans move to 1-0 in District 2A-6, putting themselves alongside Clearwater Central Catholic and Tampa Catholic in the early district race.

For Boca Ciega, the loss drops the Pirates to 0-1 in district play.

And in this district, there isn’t much room to sit on a loss.

Clearwater Central Catholic, Tampa Catholic, Lakewood, Calvary Christian and Berkeley Prep make up a group where nearly every district game carries weight. Boca Ciega still has plenty of football left, but the Pirates will have to put Friday behind them quickly.

They came into the night with one of Pinellas County’s hottest offenses.

Lakewood held it to zero offensive touchdowns.

After everything that surrounded this matchup during the offseason, the Spartans got the result that mattered most.
